Circa 1900-1938 CONNECTICUT landscape oil painting on wood. Attributed to Frederick Matzow 1861-1938. Mr. F. Matzow is a listed American artist who also worked at the Handel Lamp Company where he produced fine hand painted landscape reverse painted lamp shades in this same style. This example came from the original owners home in New Haven Connecticut, where a number of signed F. Matzow paintings in this manner and style were purchased. Painting on wood is unsigned while the brush strokes, subject and style are like those from the collection as well as other documented Frederick Matzow paintings. Mr. Matzow was a prolific painter in Connecticut during the first third of the 20th century, many his works are found to be signed and unsigned. This item has the original framers label on the reverse side "CUTLERS NEW HAVEN". We have owned a number of signed F. Matzow paintings also framed by Cutlers of New Haven Connecticut. There are no repairs or restorations nor has this item been attempted to be cleaned. The oil on board measures 7 1/2" X 6 1/2". The frame appears to be original to the work of art and measures 11" X 10".

CONNECTICUT VALLEY LANDSCAPE OIL PAINTING ON BOARD CIRCA 1900-1930

Antique circa 1900-1930 Connecticut valley American oil painting on board. We have not been able to locate an artist signature but this item was purchased from the original owners' estate located in New Haven Connecticut. This estate also included a number of signed and unsigned works by Frederick Matzow with most of them dating to the mid 1920's. The frame appears to be original and is in need of restoration.  The painting has no damage or repairs and has not been attempted to be cleaned. The oil on board measures 10 1/2" X 8 1/2". The frame measures approximately 15 1/2" X 13 1/2".

"PROMISE OF LIFE" biblical etching by MARVIN HAYES, created as part of his famous "God's Images. The Bible' A New Vision" series. The image shows the hand of Noah with the dove of peace perched upon his finger presenting the olive branch." MARVIN HAYES, born September 30, 1929 in Canton, Mississippi is universally considered one of the finest living artists in the United States. Along with the poet/novelist JAMES DICKEY they produced a spectacular collection of biblical etchings called "God's Images. The Bible" A New Vision" in 1973. This is considered to be Mr. Hayes masterwork with awe inspiring images from the bible. Mr. Hayes was our neighbor in Wilton Connecticut for decades and I, along with my family members, neighbors and friends all were honored to sit as the inspirations of many of the magical images created by Mr. Marvin Hayes. This example is but one of the originals that was so kindly given to a family member. Mr. Hayes is an extensively listed artist in Who's Who in American Art and his works have been shown and are permanently displayed in some of the finest collections worldwide. Among these collections are the Vatican Museum, Metropolitan, Boston, Smithsonian, National Portrait Gallery, Brooklyn, Bibliothèque Nationale and New York Public Library as well as the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis collections among many others. This image measures framed 12" X 9 3/8" while the matt cut area measures 7 1/2" X 5 1/4". This item comes in its original artist display frame and matt and has no damage or repairs.

Circa 1960's Jewish humor artist signed lithograph by J. HERR. This item appears to have its original black matt and well worn silver frame. We note that the frame can be displayed as is or replaced as it is in less than perfect condition, wear, scratches and some small dents as well as some nail holes. Rabbi inspecting a reclining nude female work of art in a gallery. The frame measures 21" X 17" while the opening of the black matt measures 13" X 9".
