ROOKWOOD ART POTTERY

Rookwood Pottery; Maria Longworth Nichols Storer, daughter of wealthy Joseph Longworth, founded Rookwood Pottery in 1880 as a result of being inspired by what she saw at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, including Japanese and French ceramics. The first Rookwood Pottery was located in a renovated school house on Eastern Avenue which had been purchased by Maria's father at a sheriff's sale in March 1880. Mrs. Storer named it Rookwood, after her father's country estate near the city in Walnut Hills. The first ware came from the kiln on Thanksgiving Day of that year. Through years of experimentation with glazes and kiln temperatures, Rookwood pottery became a popular American art pottery, designed to be at least as decorative as it is useful.

Each era of Rookwood work has its own unique character. The earliest work is relief worked on colored clay, in red, pinks, grays and sage or olive greens. Some were gilt, or had stamped patterns, and some were carved. Storer sought a "standard" look for Rookwood and developed the "Standard Glaze," a yellow tinted, high gloss clear glaze often used over leaf or flower motifs.

With increased interest in the American Arts & Crafts Movement, a matte glaze was needed which could be used over under glaze decoration (largely floral and scenic). Rookwood responded in 1904 with the introduction of the "Vellum" glaze, which presented a matte surface but through which could be seen the slightly frosted appearing decoration beneath.

The items offered for sale on this page are antique/vintage. Items should be expected to  have normal anomalies present, such as glaze crawl marks, tool marks, slight spotting from the making in the finish, normal use shelf wear, small bubbles which may or may not have opened during the firing process or light edge wear roughness to the touch which would not be considered as post production damage.

LBK3048

ROOKWOOD POTTERY "IRIS GLAZE" with "SILVER PLATE ON BRONZE" mug. Artist signed SEC for Sally E. Coyne. Dated with Rookwood's reverse RP and 14 flame logo, the date letter V for 1905. No shape number as this was a special order item and is inscribed underneath "COMMERCIAL CLUB OF CINCINNATI 1880-1905". There is also a hand incised W. for requiring the Iris Glaze to have been applied. The silver is inscribed MR. McDOWELL. Mr. McDowell was the president of the Louisville Commercial Club in 1905 and one of the few representatives to have attended the ceremony held in Cincinnati Ohio in 1905. Rookwood Pottery produced individual and personal inscribed mugs for the members of the Commercial Club in attendance. There are a small handful of such mugs in various glaze treatments, all of which appear to have the silver plate over bronze application and all decorated with a clover and leaf design. This mug has a number of glaze issues, discolorations and darkened crazing areas resulting in spider cracks which may or may not go through the ceramic body. We have no attempted to clean the silver nor the body of this item. There are no other repairs or chips outside of small flakes along some of the hairline crazing present. Measures 5 1/4" X 5".
